Review of ‘Under the Tuscan Gun’
I recently finished Tess Rafferty’s novel ‘Under the Tuscan Gun’ and is was hilarious! Yes, there was a lot of murder but aside from that, the characters, especially Kat who is the main ‘detective’, were fantastic. I do not personally know Tess but I imagine her to be exactly like this woman.
The story begins in a small town outside of Tuscany in Italy. It did take me a bit to get all of her characters in order but once I started picturing them and their mindsets, it was easier to follow. I could literally see myself with this group of people drinking wine on the beach, eating fantastic meals in the town square and laying poolside with them at the villa, again drinking wine.
I do wish she visited the circus that was continuously brought up. I can completely understand though. The last time I was in Italy, the circus was in town. I could see the tents from my balcony but was warned not to go because of so much theft. Now, my curiosity says that I should have left all my belongings in my room and went to see what it was all about.
I loved how real these characters were and how closely the resembled people I would hang out with. “watch my kids so I can get drunk” may not be what they say out loud but it is the absolute context of their sentences. Even down to the part where they are facing the killer with a gun in their face and just start laughing. My best friend would absolutely start laughing and then she would get me started. I literally laughed out loud at this part of the book.
Overall, this was a fun read and I cannot wait to see what Tess comes up with next. Cheers!
